The pleasure of making lies in its ability to magically transport you back to a different space and time; and for me that’s one of peace and serenity. — Jariet Olabimpe Oloyé
Handwoven Sculptural Jewellery & Objects
Jariet work is rooted in culture, heritage and history. Inspiration as artist came from her childhood lived experience in the midst of Yoruba artisans in Nigeria; with whom she was taught to play with different natural materials and participated in the arts of woven Aso-oke, the Yoruba renowned prestigious hand-woven colourful traditional fabric; the symbol of identity, and social status. Jariet also participated in the art of basketry, and other crafts.
The Yoruba poetic way of expression and storytelling, that being passed from one generation to the next thoroughly inspired Jariet to be a creative that embraces joy and happiness.
Egypt The Cradle of Wonders
Egypt is one of the earlier civilizations, first settled around 6,000 BC.
We do not know exactly where the art of basketry originated but, from the evidence collected from the tombs in Theban Necropolis, the ancient burial ground of Egyptians 18th, 19th, and 20th Dynasties: British Museum, The Lidded Basket containing fruit, Reg. No. 5395, is the first known high quality basket made of pliable palm fiber.
a short History of glass
Jariet admired and honoured the ingenuity of the craftsmen working in glass in Mesopotamia; the land between Tigris and Euphrates Rivers around 3500 BC. They discovered the art of mixing sand, soda, and lime to make material glass, heating it in open moulds and cast into objects.
Functions and versatility of materials led Jariet to explore the intrinsic relationship of metal and glass. ‘The alchemy, parallel, and hot fusion of both mediums’. She researched, experiment and developed own metal alloys which she successfully mixes with glass using plaster mould and lost-wax casting techniques, to create aesthetic pieces of artwork, depicting the beauty of nature and the natural world. These are unique one-of-a-kind pieces.
